What an AWESOME way to close out the show!

"Empire State of Mind"

Last night’s VMAs has to rank as the best show we have seen in awhile. From the fashions to the actions to the stage, I was thoroughly entertained. There is so much to talk about; I don’t know where to begin. For those of you who missed the award winners, here is a recap:

  • Video of the Year: Beyonce  “Single Ladies(Put a Ring On It)”
  • Best New Artist: Lady Gaga “Poker Face”
  • Best Hip-Hop Video: Eminem “We Made You”
  • Best Male Video: T.I. ft. Rihanna “Live Your Life”
  • Best Pop Video: Britney Spears “Womanizer”
  • Best Rock Video: Green Day “21 Guns”
  • Best Female Video: Taylor Swift “You Belong With Me”

Congratulations to all of them. I believe that everyone won in their own rightful places. Now, I did not want to discuss the “Kanye Catastrophe,” but I have to. When I saw him up there, I thought he was going to make a joke of it and actually congratulate Taylor. However, he decided to be Kanye and steal her joy as well as embarrass Beyonce. Some are using Kanye’s alcohol level (seen on the red carpet with a bottle of Hennessey) as an excuse for his behavior, but I am not! Alcohol is never a reason for anything. I am sure many of us thought B should have gotten the award, but then I started to really think about it. Taylor Swift is a country pop artist and winning best female was only right. I adore the girl and the growth and change she has made in her career thus far, kudos Taylor. I think everyone is forgetting that video of the year trumps all the rest. Of course Beyonce could have won best female, but she is best of the year, which means she could have won in all the other categories that she was up for. I love both of these beautiful ladies and commend Beyonce for allowing Taylor to get her dream back.

As for fashions, there was so much I oogled over last night, and some things I was disturbed by (Lady Gaga’s face coverings). I was able to find quite a bit of the red carpet happenings, thanks to MTV.  Beyonce looked sexy yet refined as always. I love that she went for red, and I adored the pockets on her dress. I would also like to give kudos to B’s lace bejeweled leotard she performed in. FAB! Wonder if Mrs. Knowles is the designer. Taylor Swift is my favorite new comer and she looked gorgeous in her backless dress. She was tastefully sexy and the single beaded strap was what made it that way. The City’s, Whitney Port, was simplistically elegant as usual. I have always watched and admired Whitney’s style ever since she debuted on The Hills. Her style was what also landed her own show.  Whitney gets best dressed out of the The Hills and The City gal pals. Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari, Lo Bosworth, and Olivia Palermo all looked nice, but had nothing on Whitney.  Kristin’s dress might have tickled some fancies, but I couldn’t get with the shoes and the dress as an ensemble.

Many celebs chose classic black for the evening. Ne-Yo and Swizz Beatz both looked handsome and clean cut in their all black attire.  Nelly Furtado, Madonna, and Alicia Keys were the exquisite ladies in black. Nelly’s dress was beautiful with what appeared to be black studs; and reminded me of the Givenchy Studded Zipper Sandals from yesterday’s post. Madonna needs no fancy dress or accessories, because she has time on her side. I really believe she has found the fountain of youth. I adore Alicia’s red carpet dress, but it was her performance ensemble that I loved. Glitter tights with a simple black tunic-tee, metal chunked necklace, and shoes to die for. Alicia is one classy lady, you have to love her. As for celebrities in black, the much anticipated Dirty Money clan was not so fortunate on how their attire turned out. This was awkward for me as I am used to the Diddy that must have everything PERFECT! The girls were kind of thrown together and Diddy could have come with a little more flava. I just was not impressed by a group that is to debut an album soon. Ah ha! Maybe the album has them under stress and the VMAs were the least of their worries. Let’s just hope.  As for Miss Solange, she looked radiant in her one-sleeved ribbon ruffled dress. The Barbie pink lips have been her new thing since the new do and I love it. Kid Kudi who is adorabley handsome was also in the building.

Before we go into my fashion flops and oh so ordinary, I have to mention Katy Perry and Leighton Meester’s metallic attire. Katy Perry has a great body so she killed in her armor inspired silver dress. As for those celebs who just seemed to be present, I have a few. Amarie and Cassie are both known for their hair and showing off their legs. Amarie has dwindled into just another pretty girl and Cassie just needs attention. J Lo’s dress did not win it for me. I sometimes think celebs, or their stylist, forget that when you want to make a statement or stand out, you still must be FASHIONABLE! Amber Rose showed up in a printed bodysuit with gold accessories and Miss Keri Baby decided to go with a black embroidered jumpsuit with a new do. I like the cat suit idea for Amber, but I kind of feel something was missing. I adored Keri’s hair and her look all together. I give the plunge and bodysuit award to Keri and ask that Dawn (of Dirty Money) and Amber Rose please try again next year.

All-in-all, the show was a success minus a few flukes (Kanye and Lil Mama). The show was closed out with what I saw as perfection. Jay-Z and Alicia set the tone and was the cherry on top. “Empire State of Mind” is a genius song simply because it is so true; New York City is so inspiring.

I could sit and write all day on last night’s fashions and events, but I am sure you all have read enough. I warned you all with last week’s post that the VMAs were coming and in full effect. I hope you all enjoyed, I sure did!
